Olmos Park, Texas
This 1929 Spanish-eclectic residence in Olmos Park is the forever home to a couple with evolving needs. After years of small modifications, they decided it was time to invest in a comprehensive remodel that’d return the house to its roots.
First challenged by a simple lack of storage and inadequate lighting, they called on our team to enhance functionality. In the kitchen, a complete reconfiguration optimizes the flow around an efficient cookline and drawers defined for each utensil, spice, and coffee grinder. A Laundry room with integrated ironing boards and folding tables. And the main suite’s confined bathroom was gutted to the studs to reveal original stained glass windows, just off center enough to play into the home’s eclectic nature.
While respectful to the home’s historic proportions and structure, this redesign also implements contemporary details and fixtures that reflect the owners’ taste. Sleek brass hardware marries with lively floral wallpaper. Aegean blue cabinets surround travertine counters. The result is an appropriate combination of Mediterranean influence and modern style.
The design of the new windows and French doors takes inspiration from existing 5-point arches, a geometry that the team recalculated and transcribed into full size mockups for a local millworker. The expansive door to the covered porch is fitted with a custom dog door that wants to hide in plain sight.
The exterior was redesigned just as any other room in the house. To provide additional shading and nighttime lighting, a pergola takes over the backyard’s patio. This space hosts a TV, grill, and bar to accommodate outdoor activities that the couple enjoys. A copper rain gutter, repainted windows, and colorful tiles contrast with the sophisticated residence.
