The Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas is a unique organization dedicated to the support of children who have suffered the death of a loved one. From its inception in 1997 the Center has grown to provide support to over 350 children each year. As a result they outgrew the converted three-story home it had called home for many years.
In transforming a residential home into the CBC, maintaining a therapeutic, home-like character was essential. The design integrates administrative and community spaces on the lower level with counseling facilities above, focusing on familiar and welcoming hardware, finishes, and windows. The addition of a new family counseling room, envisioned as a glass pavilion, enhances the connection to nature with a private garden, creating a nurturing environment supportive of the healing process for bereaved children.
