Bohanan’s Courtyard

San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio’s Houston Street has a storied history of retail and live theater, an early 1900s center of urban activity that predates the Riverwalk. During a later downtime in downtown’s growth, Mark Bohanan reinvigorated the corridor with his still renowned fine dining restaurant and later a cozy street level bar.

At the time, the city carved out an adjacent courtyard between his and another historic building, incorporating local artists work, however the space was geared more toward circulation.

Local tile and metal artists' work was incorporated into fountains, signage, and decorative lighting, mimicing the splendor of the Majestic Theater right across the street. Bohanan's, the longest standing neighbor to this courtyard, is now expanding dining into the outdoor space. Custom marble and brass tables now sit amongst new trees, lush planter boxes, and the revived original tile fountain. Granite tile covers the courtyard floor. Fabric shade canopies and string lights stretch overhead, creating an intimate feel in the otherwise breezy space. Steel gates mark the courtyard entrance with punched copper patterns from the same artist workshop that helped define the courtyard over 20 years ago.
